Originally part of the area surveyed for the nation's capital, Arlington's history is as long as that of Washington itself. In 1790, Congress directed selection of a new capital site along the Potomac River, which ultimately included some 30 square miles on the Virginia side of the river. The seat of government was transferred from Philadelphia to Washington on December 1, 1800. However, in 1846, Congress returned the area that became Arlington to the state of Virginia.
