The Arts & Crafts House and Garden

Start: 10 July 2009 at 6:00 p.m.End: 12 July 2009 at 2:00 p.m. With Steven Desmond The Arts & Crafts House and GardenArt Appreciation & Fine ArtsThe Arts and Crafts movement arose in the 19th century as a reaction to the perceived degradation of society by the processes and products of the industrial revolution. Its prophets, including Ruskin and Morris, proposed a revival of traditional craftsmanship and a home life rooted in domesticity. In their wake a legion of conscientious architects, artisans and garden-makers generated a style which made England famous and whose legacy lives on in conservation practice. This course will review the sources, effects and limitations of these big ideas by discussing a range of houses with their contents and gardens. It will include a visit to Rodmarton Manor.Students may like to visit the Court Barn Museum in nearby Chipping Campden on the Sunday afternoon and see the wonderful arts and crafts collection there.Related links:www.rodmarton ...
