About the Major The Department of English is dedicated to the study of the literatures and cultures of those parts of the world in which English is the primary language, and to the study of the history and structure of the English language itself. Although committed to no single method or approach, the department encourages an emphasis on British, American, and world literary history and requires of its undergraduate majors a firsthand acquaintance with many of the more influential writers who have helped during the past millennium to make English a global language that possesses richly diverse and highly influential literary cultures. Within the department, students are able to pursue a variety of approaches to the study of literary culture beyond the strictly historical -- literary criticism, for example, or those that draw on the resources of such disciplines as sociology, psychology, and philosophy. Within the B.A. degree in English, qualified students may elect a concentration eit ... (Training Available by University of California-Los Angeles) English

Through the critical reading of a diversity of texts€”ancient to contemporary€”from the United States, Britain, and around the world, English majors further their understanding and appreciation of the literary craft and cultural significance of works of fiction, poetry, drama, and creative non-fiction, and they learn to incorporate their own interpretations and creativity into writing analytically about the works they have studied. Students learn not only about literary value and artistic merit, but also about the diverse cultures that produce literature, from classical Greece to modern Japan. The English degree at Dominican is designed to ground students in literary classics and provide them with the techniques of close reading, deepened by literary criticism. What Is English? LMU's English major helps students discover how – as poet Donald Hall suggests – to “say the unsayable” and better appreciate how great writing achieves that end. Believing that literature is a profound expression of human experience, the English Department uses a range of critical methods to introduce students to English-language literatures from a variety of cultural traditions. This approach gives students a sense of the diversity of human experience and their own place in the world. Close work with literature allows students special insight into the shared resource that is our language and helps them learn to express themselves and evaluate the written expression of others. This work – including writing and reading fiction, poetry, and drama – provides students with practice in critical reading and writing in preparation for graduate study, teaching, and a diverse range of professions. This close work prepares students for wo ... (Training Available by Loyola Marymount University) English

Bachelor's Degree in English Home Academics Undergraduate ProgramsEnglishEnglish majors love words — the words of others and their own. We communicate with words, do business with words, and record history in words. But for the student of literature and writing, words express what it means to be human — across cultures, time, and place. In short, English is a cornerstone of the liberal arts curriculum. The HNU English major, which is a 30-unit (24 upper-division) program, features a strong core of challenging and diverse literature courses (primarily in British and American literature), provides training in various forms of writing, and offers interesting and practical electives. While many English majors go on to earn teaching credentials, all students who successfully complete our program are able to enter the professional world (or graduate school) with highly developed analytical and communication skills. English Writing - US

Occidental's writing courses instruct students in the elements of expository prose, the rhetorical processes and strategies used by successful writers, the psychosocial principles that underlie the act of composing, and the contribution of writing to learning. Course work explores the structure of exposition and develops critical interpretations of texts. All courses require a substantial amount of critical reading, writing, and revision. All classes provide considerable guidance in the writing process and extensive feedback on papers: through student-professor and student-student conferences.Since not everyone writes the same way, and not all writing tasks have the same requirements, diverse approaches to writing are emphasized in the course work: imitation of models, paradigmatic schemes, and behavioral strategies. Course content draws from the related fields of cultural studies, cognitive and social psychology, rhetoric, literature, and linguistics. English Writing classes p ...
